Slack for the day job. Discord for a community. Teams because one client refuses to move off it. WhatsApp and Messenger for the people who will never install anything new. LINE or Telegram stacked on top. Every one of them ships a Mac app, and every one of them wants a dock icon, a menu bar item, a login session, and permission to interrupt.
Searching for the best all in one messenger for Mac is usually the reaction to that pile. The trouble is that the phrase covers two completely different kinds of product, and choosing the wrong kind is the reason the pile comes back a month later. Sorting out which kind is needed takes about five minutes and saves the rest.
Two products hide behind one search term
The first kind is a bridge. A bridge connects to each messaging network on the account holder's behalf and pours every conversation into a single list. One sidebar, one unread count, one search box across iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram and the rest. Beeper is the name that comes up most often in this shape, and Apple's own Messages app is a limited version of the same idea when a phone number and an Apple Account are the only identities involved.

Two rows deserve a second look.
Ferdium is Apache-2.0 open source with no paid tier and no account, and it can sync through a self hosted server or plain backups. The cost is that support is a community, not a company, and the interface follows the classic sidebar shape rather than anything newer.
Sidekick is the cautionary row. It was acquired by Perplexity and has shut down, and its site now forwards to Comet. Search results still rank pages that recommend it. Checking whether a product is still taking new signups is now a required step, not a formality.
Notifications are the other half of the job
Merging windows solves the sprawl. It does not, on its own, solve the interruptions, and for most people the interruptions are the reason the search started. Eight apps shouting from eight corners becomes one app shouting from one corner, which is quieter but not quiet.
The feature that changes the day is a single notification hub with a schedule attached.
