Search for a browser recommendation and the answers contradict each other, yet each one comes with a reasonable argument attached. Nobody is lying. The recommendations diverge because the writers are picturing different loads. Keeping one heavy online page running smoothly and keeping forty lightweight work apps alive all day pull in opposite directions, and a setting that helps the first actively hurts the second. Decide which load dominates your day and the comparison collapses from twenty features to about five.

Three loads, and they fight each other

Browser workload splits into three kinds, and most articles never say which one they assume.

The first is a single page that is expensive to draw or compute: an online game, a video call, a map, a canvas editor. Only one page has to stay fast, and everything else can be sacrificed for it.

The second is dozens of lightweight pages that are permanently connected: mail, chat, an issue tracker, a CRM, a dashboard. Raw speed barely matters here. What matters is that nothing silently drops its connection and that you can find the one you want in under a second.

The third is several accounts on the same service, which is not a performance problem at all. It is a storage problem, and no amount of tuning touches it.

These three pull against each other. Making one page fast is implemented by starving the others. Keeping dozens of pages alive costs memory. Separating accounts costs more memory still. No browser wins all three at once, and accepting that early is what makes the choice tractable.

What actually helps a single heavy page

When an online game or a call stutters, the browser brand is usually not the variable. Background tabs and the sleep settings are. Every major browser throttles work in tabs you are not looking at, and Chrome ships a feature that goes further and deactivates them outright. The mechanism is reclamation. Memory is taken back from tabs that are idle and handed to the one in front. Three levels are offered, described this way:

The side effect is the part worth planning around. A deactivated tab reloads when you go back to it. Half-typed forms, a chat scrolled to the right place, an admin console that takes fifteen seconds to draw: all of them come back reset. Turning the aggression up to protect a game reliably costs something on the work side. Chrome lets specific sites be excluded from deactivation, which is the setting that makes the trade survivable.

Before blaming the browser, look at what is actually consuming the machine. Chrome and Edge both include a task manager, reachable from the Window menu on macOS, which lists memory and processor use per tab and per extension. It routinely reveals that the cost is not the game at all but a dashboard refreshing on a timer, a video ad in a tab nobody has looked at since morning, or an extension running on every page. Closing two of those does more for frame rate than any browser swap.

Power state matters too. On Apple silicon, low power mode and thermal state affect frame rates directly. If a page is smooth on mains power and choppy on battery, the browser is not the thing to change.

What actually helps forty always-on apps

Here the constraint is not throughput. It is finding things. Tab width shrinks as the count grows, and past roughly ten tabs the labels are gone and only favicons remain. Five tabs from the same service become five identical squares.

Browsers answer this in three ways. Vertical tab strips keep the text readable because the list grows downward rather than sideways, and Chrome now ships this without an extension. Tab groups let a set of tabs carry a name and a colour. Split views let one window show two pages at once, which in Chrome is Command, Option and N.

Tab groups carry a trap worth knowing. Named groups sync across devices signed in to the same account, so deleting a group on one machine removes it from the others. Tidying up at home on Sunday can empty the same group on the office machine by Monday. An action that feels like cleaning is, across devices, a delete.

There is also a ceiling on this whole approach. macOS organizes windows, not tabs. Mission Control, desktop spaces, tiling, and App Exposé cannot see a tab at all. Anything you return to many times a day and keep buried in a tab strip is permanently outside every organizing tool the operating system provides.

Check the extensions before you commit to a browser

"This browser can do anything with extensions" is advice that aged badly. Chrome's older extension format, Manifest V2, has been retired on a published schedule:

That removal happened on 31 August 2026, following 24 July 2025, when Chrome 138 disabled the old format for every user on every channel. Plenty of the tab managers, session savers, and blockers named in articles from a few years ago never made the move and are simply gone. If a recommendation rests on a specific extension, check that the extension is still listed before choosing the browser around it.

Safari extensions ship through the App Store and are unaffected by that timeline, but the catalogue is smaller, so a tool available on one browser is not automatically available on the other. Firefox runs its own review process and its own add-on site, which means an extension can be present there and absent from Chrome, or the reverse. Checking availability for the specific browser under consideration takes a minute and prevents a migration that has to be undone.

Two products that appear in older recommendation lists are worth checking before you act on them. Sidekick has effectively wound down, and its site now redirects to a different product. Where notifications land is part of the choice

For the always-on load, notification behaviour affects the day more than page load times do, and most recommendation articles skip it entirely.

Browser notifications have a precondition: the tab has to be alive. Close it and the notifications stop, and a deactivated tab may go quiet as well. That puts two wishes in direct conflict. Wanting one chat app to interrupt reliably and wanting idle tabs to be put to sleep cannot both be satisfied by the same setting.

Permission prompts stack up too. Consent is asked per site, so ten web apps means ten prompts and ten decisions. More importantly, macOS sees all of them as notifications from one app: the browser. Letting the work chat make a sound while everything else stays silent is difficult to express from inside a browser, because the operating system has no way to tell those senders apart.

The reverse is genuinely useful when a single heavy page is the priority. Silencing browser notifications once silences every web app at the same time, which is exactly what you want during a call or a game and exactly what you do not want during a workday full of connected tools. How to compare two candidates in a week

Once the list is down to two, compare with counts rather than impressions. Three measurements are enough.

Count the moves to arrival. Pick the five destinations used most often and count how many key presses and how much visual searching each one takes.

Count the losses. How many times did a page that had been sitting in the background come back reloaded, throwing away typed input or scroll position.

Count the waits. How many times did a reload visibly stop your hands.

Take all three on days with the same work in the same order. These numbers track how tired the day feels far more closely than benchmark load times do, because a loading difference lands once and briefly, while searching and redoing lost work accumulate in minutes.

The result is often that placement matters more than brand. Keeping the same browser and simply promoting the things you return to daily into their own windows can move the count on its own. Changing browser is a reasonable step after placement has been fixed, not before.

Settle these questions in sequence and the shortlist writes itself.

If one heavy page is the main event, tune sleep behaviour and reduce what sits alongside it before changing browsers. If dozens of connected apps are the main event, choose how you will find them: a vertical strip, split views, or separate windows. If the same service has to be open under two accounts, split the storage, because no setting solves that. If the plan depends on an extension, confirm it is still published. Then trial whatever survives for a week each.

The first two rarely coexist well in one browser, which is why splitting by purpose is a legitimate answer rather than a compromise. Running games and calls in a plain browser while work apps live somewhere else lets both sides be tuned hard in opposite directions.
